Gorges 2

Gorges filled with history...

Word made of rocky grouds, white waters and dazzling lights, the « Grand site de France Gorges de l’Hérault » is a mosaic of spectacular and protected landscapes, which lead to amazement and to revitalisation.
While flowing down throughout the Cévennes, the Hérault river has sculpted wild gorges, both verdurous and mineral, in the massif of the Séranne, which is close to the « Pic Saint Loup ». In the middle of the « piémont languedocien », it suddenly reappears under the « Pont du Diable », on a vast plain where vines and olive trees reign supreme.
At the heart of the « Grand Site de France », the medieval village Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert shelters since the IXth century the remarkable and splendid abbey of Gellone, which will shine upon a myriad of midieval cities, churches, chapels and bridges on the Way of Saint James.

BRISSAC

The village of Brissac is an islet full of greenery in the middle of the garrigue. Its park filled with majestic trees, in which the Aveze river flows, is a very much appreciated place to take a walk. The castle and the statue of Notre-Dame du Suc, which overlook the village, are the symbols of Brissac's history.

The athletic gorges

Amateurs or experienced, by yourself or with a group, the « Gorges de l’Hérault » are the ideal place in order for you to get away in canoe, kayak or paddle.
During your journey, take a break to enjoy swimming on a beach on the riverside, between cliffs, sun and white water.

Pont d'Issensac

Saint-Etienne d'Issensac

Saint-Etienne-d’Issensac’s Chapel, first mentioned in 1080, forms, along with the priory’s vestiges and the cemetery, a place which is very much agreable to see. Close by, Saint-Etienne-d’Issensac’s Bridge, built in the Middle Ages, steps over the Herault river, and allowed the pilgrims to continue their journey towards Saint Guilhem le Désert, which is a step on the Way of Saint James. Built as a humpback bridge, it still has three of its five original archs.
Cool off there during summertime thanks to its lifeguard on duty area in July and in August, in a quiet and natural environment.
